Pediatric Psychological & Neuropsychological Testing

Psychological and neuropsychological testing involves a comprehensive assessment of emotional, personality, and brain function using standardized tests and clinical procedures as well as patient report. These examinations involves a variety of tasks, which vary depending on the reason for your evaluation and your individual needs.

Most tasks during the evaluations are completed while sitting at a table. There are no painful or invasive procedures such as needles or electrodes.  Clinical evaluations often involve 2 to 6 hours of face-to-face contact, although this varies significantly based on the referral question and other factors. Results are provided approximately 1-3 weeks following completion of the evaluation; the time it takes to obtain results depends on the referral question and the amount and complexity of testing that was done.

Toddlers, Children, and Adolescents ranging in age from 12 months to 18 years may require evaluations for a variety of reasons.  Evaluations for toddlers and young children are often broken up into multiple appointments as needed based on the individual attention span and tolerance level of the child.

Psychological evaluations may be requested on children and adolescents for the following reasons:

  • Talented/Gifted evaluations prior to enrollment in specialized or advanced academic setting

  • To evaluate for developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, or intellectual disability

  • To evaluate for behavioral concerns including AD/HD, ODD, and others

  • To evaluate for emotional distress including trauma, depressed mood, anxiety, or other problems

  • To evaluate for difficulties with learning including learning disorders of various types
